First attested as dunren in 1276. Etymology uncertain. Proposed etymologies include a compound of Old Dutch dun (“dune”) and *wari (“inhabitants”), a compound of dun and horn (“corner”), a compound of don (“taut, long”) and hari (“ridge covered in forest”) and, finally, a derivation from a term cognate to don (“pulled taut”).
