Etymology

Previously misidentified as Euglossa ignita in 1874, Euglossa bazinga was identified as a distinct species in 2012 by Brazilian entomologist André Nemésio. Nemésio named the species after bazinga, a catchphrase that the character Sheldon Cooper on the sitcom The Big Bang Theory uses when playing a trick, because he felt the species had "tricked" scientists with its similarity to E. ignita.[1][2]

Proper noun

Euglossa bazinga f

  1. A taxonomic species within the family Apidae – a recently identified orchid bee, native to Brazil.
