Borrowed from Ancient Greek Γαλάθεια (Galátheia, given name), a variant of Ancient Greek Γαλάτεια (Galáteia, given name), from Ancient Greek γᾰ́λᾰ (gắlă, “milk”) + Ancient Greek -ειᾰ (-eiă, feminine suffix).
Coined by Danish zoologist Johan Christian Fabricius in 1793.
