Gelderen
Dutch
Alternative forms
Etymology
From Gelder, later form of Gelre.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈɣɛl.də.rə(n)/
- Hyphenation: Gel‧de‧ren
Proper noun
Gelderen n
- Geldern, Guelder (city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany)
- alternative form of Gelre (“Guelders; historical duchy in the Low Countries”)
Usage notes
- The form Gelre precedes and indeed gave rise to the later form Gelderen and originally referred only to the city in Germany, which was the capital of a duchy which was named after it. Today, however, the historical form Gelre (which developed regularly into later Gelder) refers exclusively to the historical duchy, whereas the modern form Gelderen (or simply German Geldern) is used to refer to the city.
