Etymology

From Iúdach, from Old Irish Iudae (Jew) +‎ -ach, from Latin iūdaeus, from Ancient Greek Ἰουδαῖος (Ioudaîos), from Biblical Hebrew יְהוּדִי (yəhûḏî). The initial G- arose from a reinterpretation of the sound /j/ as the lenited form of /ɟ/. Early Modern Irish and Classical Gaelic have spellings in -dh-; the unlenited -d- has been restored in modern Irish on the basis of the Latin word as well as English words like Judaism and Judaic.
