Etymology
From grå + gard, with definite ending -n and the -gard part spelled as Norwegian Bokmål gård (the both variants are acceptable in the local dialect). Literally, “The Grey Farm”, although there is no farm (and never was).
The -gard part may also refer to some fenced area, in this case see also Raggarden.
