Greonterp
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as grewingdorp in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Greonterp, a compound of an uncertain first element and Old Frisian dorp (“farmstead, subsidiary settlement”). The first element may be related to greva (“dig, excavate”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to terp (“artificial mound used for habitation”).
