Grischtmunet

Pennsylvania German

Etymology

From Grischt (Christ) +‎ Munet (month). The term refers to December as the month in which Christmas occurs, known in Pennsylvania German as Grischtdaag. Compare German Julmond (Yule month), North Frisian Jöölmuun (Yule month), and Old English ærra geola (Early Yule, the Former Yule), all of which reflect the significance of Yule as the defining feature of December.
