Etymology

Potentially attested as in welpesdale in 1196, attested with certainty as welpesdael in 1224. Derived from a compound of either welp (“cub, young wolf”) or Middle Dutch Welp (a personal name) and dal (“dale, valley”) prefixed with groot (“great, big”). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Klein-Welsden.
