Etymology
First attested as Terwisga in 1622. Borrowed from West Frisian Grutte Wiske, derived from grut (“big, great”) and wiske (“wet pasture, pasture which floods in winter”). The element grut was added to distinguish the settlement from Kleine Wiske.
