Old Norse

Etymology

The first part is Old Norse gunnr (battle), from Proto-Germanic *gunþiz. The second part is vǫr. Probably derived from the Old Norse adjective varr (careful, wise, loyal), cognate to the Gothic adjective 𐍅𐌰𐍂𐍃 (wars, cautious). Alternatively, vǫr is cognate to Proto-Germanic *wari- (warrior).
