Potentially attested as jeure in 1230, attested with certainty as hiouren in 1459. Etymology unknown. Potentially cognate with West Frisian hjouwer (“oat (Avena sativa)”) or, alternatively, derived from a prehistoric hydronym. Compare De Joere, Joure and De Jouwer.
