Etymology

First attested as suornom in 814-815. Etymology uncertain. Compound of hoog (“high”) and a second element that is perhaps related to Old Swedish sôr (“barren, dry”), Middle Dutch sôor (“dry, rough, sore”), from Proto-Germanic *sauzaz. A derivation from a contracted form of Old Dutch *sūthar (“southern, south”) is not backed up by the oldest attestations of the toponym.
