Compound of køpmannæ (merchants' ) +‎ hafn (harbon, haven); literally, Harbor of the Merchants. The first part is from Old Norse kaupamanna, genitive plural of kaupamaðr (“merchant”, literally “buyman”, i.e. “a man to buy from”); the second part is from Old Norse hǫfn.
