From Middle High German knödel, from Old High German *knodila, diminutive of knodo (“knot”), whence Central Franconian Knodde, ultimately related to Proto-Germanic *knuttô (“knot”).
Compare German Knödel. The Central Franconian form was partly merged with related but distinct Knuddel (“clump”).
