Kröx
Central Franconian
Alternative forms
- Kröcks (variant spelling)
- Krütz (central and western Ripuarian)
- Kreiz (Moselle Franconian)
Etymology
From Middle High German kriuze, from Old High German krūzi, from Latin crux. The -x has nothing in particular to do with the Latin form, but is due to Ripuarian velarisation. Kröx or *Krüx would be expected also in central Ripuarian (cf. Colognian Düx), but has somehow failed to establish itself in these dialects.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /kʀøks/
Noun
Kröx n (plural Kröxer, diminutive Kröxje)
