Uncertain. Possible etymology includes:
- Inherited from Old Czech kurš (“written prayer”). This is probably related to modern kurz (“course, rate”).
- Derived from Middle High German kursen (“fur coat”), from Old High German kursināri, itself borrowed from Proto-Slavic *kъrzьno.[1]
