Luxembourgish

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [læˑɪ̯ɕ]
  • Rhymes: -æːɪɕ

Etymology 1

Inherited from Old High German līh, from Proto-Germanic *līką. Cognate with German Leiche, Dutch lijk.

Noun

Läich f (plural Läichen)

  1. corpse, dead body

Etymology 2

Borrowed from German Laich, from Middle High German leich. Formally adapted to etymology 1 because the German word is homophonous with Leiche (but for the final -e). If it had been inherited, the Luxembourgish form would be *Leech. Compare similarly Säit (string).

Noun

Läich m (uncountable)

  1. spawn
    Synonym: (native term) Bruck
