The specific epithet, Latin amplexicaule, is a form of Latin amplexicaulis.

Coined by Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist Carl Linnaeus in 1753; Linnaeus previously used the diagnostic phrase name Lamium foliis floralibus sessilibus amplexicaulibus obtusis as early as 1737.
