Etymology

Potentially attested as lenethe in 1133, attested with certainty as de lente in 1172. Etymology unknown. Perhaps derived from Proto-Germanic *hlîn- (Norway maple (Acer platanoides)) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi, related to *lindu. Compare Lent and Linde.
