First attested as lore in the second half of the 13th century. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps related to Middle Dutch lore (“worthless thing”) or modern lor (“rag, piece of junk”). No relationship with dialectal luur (“incline”) or German Low German Lüre (“elevated land”). Compare Leurke.
