From the type species of the genus Hyssopus, from which this genus was erected: Hyssopus lophanthus, now Nepeta lophantha. From the specific epithet lophanthus, comprised of lopho- (crest, from Ancient Greek λόφος (lóphos)) +‎ -anthus (flower, from Ancient Greek ἄνθος (ánthos)).
