From of the Sicilian surname Maugeri, from maugeri (“herdsman”); the old liquid consonant has been reintroduced for anagraphical purposes. Otherwise it derives from one (or more than one) Vulgar Latin stratum and it never when through the gliding process.(This etymology is missing or incomplete.
