From melano- (“dark, black”, from Ancient Greek μέλᾱς (mélās)) + Ancient Greek κεγχρίς (kenkhrís, feminine form of κέγχρος (kénkhros, “millet”)).
Coined by German botanist, embryologist and natural philosopher Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck in 1841.
