Etymology

From melano- (dark, black, from Ancient Greek μέλᾱς (mélās)) +‎ Ancient Greek κεγχρίς (kenkhrís, feminine form of κέγχρος (kénkhros, millet)).

Coined by German botanist, embryologist and natural philosopher Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck in 1841.
