From micro- (small, from Ancient Greek μῑκρός (mīkrós)) +‎ Ancient Greek πηδητικός (pēdētikós, pedetic; good at leaping or springing, usually epithetic to certain insects).

Coined by entomologist Michael Stiller in 2009.
