A development of medieval Albanian Muzaka, likely through Italian Musacchia, though the ultimate origin of the name is unclear:

• A local Albanian derivation would be from Albanian mëzak (“young calf”);
• Johan Georg Von Hahn derived it from Illyrian;
• Gjon Muzaka from Ancient Greek Μολοσσοί (Molossoí);
• Zef Jubani from Ancient Greek μουσική (mousikḗ).
