1. A taxonomic clade within the clade Eubacteria – eukaryotes and archaebacteria, having N-linked glycoprotein coats or cell walls, in contrast with the murein peptidoglycan walls in eubacteria. [from 2002]

• This term is not consistent with many of the hypotheses of the early evolution of life, including those involving syntrophy of a euryarchaeon, a deltaproteobacteium, and an alphaproteobacteria; the hydrogen hypothesis, and horizontal gene transfer, .
