Norgaila

Lithuanian

Etymology

(Baltic origin:) Composed of the two stems norė́ti (to want) +‎ gailas (strong, powerful). The name is widely considered to have been adapted into Old Ruthenian as Наргелъ / Наргела / Наргайла (Narhel). This suggests an ancient origin that predates its documented appearance in East Slavic languages. The reconstructed variant is hypothesized as *Nargaila.

(Germanic origin:) Some Germanist scholars claimed that the name Norgaila and its cognates are counterparts of Old High German Nargil. This perspective disputes analyses that construct the name solely from Balto-Slavic onomastics.
