    From Ancient Greek ὄχθη (ókhthē, bank, riverbank, dyke) +‎ Ancient Greek βῐ́ος (bĭ́os, life).

    Coined by English zoologist and marine biologist (1790/1–1836) William Elford Leach in 1815.
