From Ancient Greek ὄχθη (ókhthē, “bank, riverbank, dyke”) + Ancient Greek βῐ́ος (bĭ́os, “life”).
Coined by English zoologist and marine biologist (1790/1–1836) William Elford Leach in 1815.
