Etymology
By surface analysis, ortho- (“straight”, from Ancient Greek ὀρθός (orthós)) + Latin centrum (“center”, from Ancient Greek κέντρον (kéntron)) + -us (adjectival suffix). Compare English orthocenter, French orthocentre, Greek ορθόκεντρο (orthókentro), etc.
Coined by German zoologist and entomologist Johann Ludwig Christian Carl Gravenhorst in 1829.
