Etymology

By surface analysis, ortho- (straight, from Ancient Greek ὀρθός (orthós)) +‎ Latin centrum (center, from Ancient Greek κέντρον (kéntron)) +‎ -us (adjectival suffix). Compare English orthocenter, French orthocentre, Greek ορθόκεντρο (orthókentro), etc.

Coined by German zoologist and entomologist Johann Ludwig Christian Carl Gravenhorst in 1829.
