Etymology
First attested as pahindrecht and pagindrecht in 1114-1127. Compound of a personal name, a hydronym, or an inflected form of Middle Dutch page (“horse”) and -drecht (“ferry, watercourse”). The name originally referred to a village which was destroyed by the sea in 1421.
