From philo- (favoring; having a disposition for; loving, from Ancient Greek φῐ́λος (phĭ́los)) +‎ Ancient Greek δρόμος (drómos, running; a race).

Coined by French civil servant and scientist Charles Athanase Walckenaer in 1826.
