From philo- (“favoring; having a disposition for; loving”, from Ancient Greek φῐ́λος (phĭ́los)) +‎ Ancient Greek δρόμος (drómos, “running; a race”).

Coined by French civil servant and scientist Charles Athanase Walckenaer in 1826.
