Borrowed from Latin psōra f (“itch”), itself borrowed from Ancient Greek ψώρᾱ f (psṓrā, “itch; disease of trees; scab”). Both the Latin and Ancient Greek terms also mean 'scabies', this could be related to the scattered pattern both scabies and this genus of lichen follow or appear as.
