From ptero- (“wing, feather”, from Ancient Greek πτερόν (pterón)) + -phyllum (“leaf”, from Ancient Greek φῠ́λλον (phŭ́llon).) Doublet of Pterophylla.
Coined by Austrian taxidermist, zoologist, and ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840.
