According to Leo Spitzer, a diminutive of an unattested Latin *charax, borrowed from Ancient Greek χάραξ (khárax, “pole, stick”); alternatively, Coromines proposes the form *caraculum, which he believes is ultimately derived from a Pre-Roman *kar (“rock”).
