Reconstruction:Latin/vera
Latin
Etymology
From Latin vēra, plural of vēr (“spring”), reinterpreted as a feminine singular noun. In the Balkans its meaning shifted to 'summer' because the derivatives of Late Latin prīma vēra (originally 'early spring') had taken over the general sense of 'spring'. Cf. the similar semantic chain-shift in Ibero-Romance derivatives of *vērānum.
