According to some sources, from *витѧѕь (*vitędzĭ, knight, hero) +‎ миръ (mirŭ, world, peace). [1] The last part is probably from Proto-Slavic *-měrъ changed by folk etymology into миръ (mirŭ, peace) like Володимѣръ (Volodiměrŭ).
