This Old Norse entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Old Norse

Etymology

Of uncertain origin, but possibly related to English blight, which see.[1]

Noun

*blettr m

  1. stain
  2. blot

Usage notes

  • Attested in late copies of Old Norse texts from after the end of Norse as a living language, where earlier (Norse-era) copies of the texts have words like flekkr, such that it cannot be ruled out that the occurrence of blett(r) in the later copies is only due to the influence of Icelandic (or Faroese).

Descendants

  • Faroese: blettur
  • Icelandic: blettur
  • ? Middle English: blot
  • >? Old Swedish: plætter
