Prakrit

Etymology

Uncertain. Phonetically, a relation to Sanskrit उन्मर्दयति (unmardayati, rubs) is appealing. Compare *𑀉𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀭𑀇 (*ubbaraï) and *𑀉𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀮𑀇 (*ubbalaï), whence Hindi उबलना (ubalnā, to boil).

Verb

*𑀉𑀫𑁆𑀫𑀟𑀇 (*ummaḍaï) (Devanagari *उम्मडइ)

  1. to rise, bubble up
