Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁epi (“on, upon”). Cognate to Ancient Greek ὄπιθε (ópithe, “behind”), ὄπιθεν (ópithen, “behind”) (alternative form of ὄπισθεν (ópisthen, “behind, backwards, in the future”)).[1]
