Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰṓy-in-kos (literally frisky animal > hare), from *ǵʰey- (to drive). Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰáyas, from which Sanskrit हय (háya, horse), Proto-Armenian *jeioh, from which Armenian ձի (ji, horse)
