Potentially from Proto-Atlantic-Congo *-jam- or Proto-Atlantic-Congo *-nam-. Cognates outside Bantu are Proto-Grassfields *nàm` (animal), Tiv *inyam (meat), Efik *unam (meat) (from Proto-Lower Cross River *ú-nàm (animal) and Proto-Edoid *E-nhamhɪ (animal/meat)).
