Proto-Bodish

Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *tV-wəm.

Noun

*(d)wam

  1. bear (animal)

Reconstruction notes

  • Bodt reconstructs Proto-Bodish *s.dʷam in order to account for aberrant initials in Dakpa (the initial ranges to zero to /w/ to /h/ to /x/) via some sort of intermediate change to *swam.[1]
  • *(d)wam is inspired by Jacques, who posits that the *d was originally a pre-initial and the actual initial is *w (see the rGyalrongic cognates as a demonstration).
