Proto-Bodish

Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *dzaʔ.

Verb

*za

  1. to eat

Reconstruction

  • This is one of a few verbs where Tibetan shows an ablaut alternation between *a and *o with the East Bodish forms preserving an *o form. Also, the Dakpa-Dzala regular shift of *a to *e did not occur in this verb.[1] The origin of the *o form has been fiercely debated without a consensus, with every scholar weighing in on the matter having their own theory.
