Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *bʰreh₁w-eh₂,[1] perhaps from (or the source of) a root *bʰrewh₁-, whence Proto-Germanic *brugjǭ (English bridge, German Brücke). More at Proto-Indo-European *h₃bʰrúHs.
