Etymology

Unknown; most likely from a non-IE substrate language. Attested only in the Insular Celtic languages.[1] Alternatively a derivative of *krép-s ~ *kr̥p-ós (body) (whence Proto-Celtic *krixs), such as *kr̥p-t-eh₂ or *kr̥p-dʰh₁-eh₂, but the sound change required for Celtic *-tt- is unknown and found in other unexplained words.
