It is unclear if the Igala form, íŋɔ́ is a descendant. If so, that would make this term inherited from Proto-Yoruboid. However, it is from a Proto-Volta-Congo source, see Igbo añụ, Urhobo ọ́nyọ, Fon wĭìn, Aja enyi, Gun owín, Proto-Bantu *njíkɪ̀, Proto-Benue-Congo *-toŋi, and Proto-Grassfields *yú
