Etymology

Probably from Proto-Uralic *ćoma (good, nice) (whence also Proto-Samoyedic *somå).[1] Alternatively, possibly related to Northern Sami suopmat. In the past posited to derive from Proto-Germanic *sōmaz, *sōmiz,[2] but this requires a reconstruction *soma.
