Proto-Finnic

Etymology

From earlier *šopëta (soft); cognate with Proto-Samic *suopētē. Possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *samftijaz (soft) and nativized with the suffix +‎ *-ëda. The sense "silver" derives from the fact that silver is softer than copper, which was the first main metal known by (early) Finnic speakers.
