Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Unknown. Rejected comparisons with Hungarian jön (implying inheritance) and Sanskrit जहाति (jahāti) (implying borrowing from Indo-Iranian), both on phonological and semantic grounds. The derivative *jättädäk (*jättä- < ? *jäCV-Ctä-) exhibiting a short initial vowel (instead of *jäättädäk) may imply that the word is at least from the Middle Proto-Finnic stage.

Verb

*jäädäk (stem *jää-)[1]

  1. to stay, to remain
